The Science of Digital Cameras
Digital camera is defined as a digital device used to record and transform pictures into an electronic data. It is different to ordinary or analog cameras because it is filmless, lightweight, and multifunctional. Its data are stored in a flash memory card or optical disk. With the modern technologies of today, it usually comes in handy sizes and can be used as a multipurpose device able to capture photographs, video, and sounds. Steven Sasson, an Eastman Kodak engineer, became the first person to create a realistic digital camera in December 1975. At that time, his 8-pound, toaster-size invention "was a little bit revolutionary." Sasson's first digital camera has Motorola's analog-to-digital converter, a Kodak lens, and Fairchild Semiconductor's CCD (Charge-coupled device an integrated chip used to record images). In 1981, Sony Corporation promoted the Mavica filmless camera. This camera became the brainchild of other futuristic digital cameras like the Iomega Zipcam, Agfa ePhoto CL30 Clik!, and the Panasonic PV-SD4090. Digital cameras are organized into different classifications. The first kind is the Video Camera (examples are webcams, camcorders, and professional video cameras), second is the Still Camera (usually used to capture pictures and then convert it into digital formats, examples are the standard digital cameras and the digital single-lens reflex camera), and the third is the Professional Modular Digital Camera Systems (captures images through "Single Shot", "Multi-Shot", and "Scan" method). Digital camera has many connectivity instruments. Some of them include the USB (Universal Serial Bus), FireWire (also identified as the i.Link or IEEE 1394), and Bluetooth (a kind of wireless personal area network or PAN gadget).Design rule for Camera File system (DCF), DPOF (Digital Print Order format), Exchangeable Image File Format (Exif), Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), and Raw are digital camera's general formats. Among the world's top manufacturers of digital cameras include JVC, Samsung, Sony, Konica, Nikon, Agfa, Polaroid, and Canon.
